Gay in the Gulag

The latest issue of DIK Fagazine, "BEFORE ’89," is the culmination of extensive archive work, as well as travels across Europe, that touches on a cultural legacy specific to Poland. Drawing from a range of contributors, the magazine follows a trail through Poland, Russia, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Bruce LaBruce’s text gives the impression that’s describing a time when Communism is alive and well, and not Poland in the year 2000. Wolfgang Tillmans, who first visited Warsaw in 2011, provides an account of the anniversary of the plane crash in Smolensk, celebrated in the overblown national-religious vein of the Polish right.

The publication follow the trail through park cruising areas, train station, beaches and other casual hook-up spots, at points envious of the sexual encounters with strangers. Ryszard Kisiel shares the astonishing story of his zine titled “Filo”, partially reprinted here. Slava Mogutin uncovers the story of homosexuals in the Soviet Gulag. Finally, "BEFORE ‘89" conducts a search investigation for Michel Foucault’s Polish lover. This issue also brings the unsettling texts and drawings by Wojtek Bąkowski, as well as a comic strip by Andrej Dubravsky, a young Slovakian artist.

Printed Matter is pleased to present 24 DAYS OF MATTER PRINTED, a live screenprinting project by J. Morrison. From December 1st until the 24th, daily screenprinting sessions will feature a rotating cast of 20 artists creating collaborative works in the Printed Matter storefront. During these sessions, the artistic collaboration will be accumulative, with a new artist each day adding his or her own print to the previously produced prints. Prints will be available for purchase at any stage during this process.

Working under the theme of a "Self-Portrait,” the artists will print their creation on a variety of media - from Sweatshirts, Underwear, Handkerchiefs, and a special fine art Paper Edition of 100. They will be priced affordably, ranging from $10-$100, with the paper edition increasing as the show progresses with all of the artists' screenprints collaged together. The works created will be on exhibit at Printed Matter through mid-January.

This year’s exhibition with J. Morrison follows in a long tradition of Printed Matter's holiday events to support the institution, including past fundraisers organized by the artists' collective Collaborative Projects (or COLAB), and Giftland, curated by Max Schumann and guest curators. J. Morrison’s show title and theme are a play off the “12 Days of Christmas” and in modern commercial times the "25 Days of Christmas," giving an artist's alternative view of holiday consumerism.

Because of Love: a new multi-disciplinary performance piece by Franko B

Because of Love is a major new performance piece which aims to bring Franko’s practice to new audiences - not only within the context of visual art, but also dance and theatre. He will be collaborating with some fantastic artists from different fields to realize the piece, which is concerned with childhood, humanity, inhumanity, love and grief.

The piece is loosely autobiographical, drawing upon personal and cultural memories from different times in Franko’s life. Central to the work is the idea of the sentimentality of memory – the emotional charge and romanticism often applied to the experience of remembering.

The piece is ambitious in its scale and complexity, bringing together elements of human presence, projected video, live music and lighting to weave a loose, non-linear narrative over a duration of around forty minutes. Individual images will be given time and space to develop and for connections to be made - or not made between them..

The performance will involve a life-sized, mechanical polar bear, which Franko will dance with - not so much as a tightly controlled piece of choreography, but more as an instinctive response to the dynamic mis-en-scene and contexts in which the work will be shown.

Versions of the work will be devised in different formats to suit the different spaces and contexts in which it will be presented.

The piece is expected to tour from Spring 2012, with the first confirmed performance at the New Moves International Festival at the CCA in Glasgow in March 2012.

Collaborators
Collaborators will include: Steve Wald (production manager); Othon Mataragas (musician); Walter van Beirendonck (fashion designer); Kamal Ackarie (lighting designer); Thomas Qualmann (animator).

Budget
Franko has already raised around half of the total amount of money needed to produce the work, but he still needs another £25000 (about $40000). The money will pay for the newly commissioned works that will form elements of the piece (including music, animation, costumes) and for the polar bear - whose construction is technically complex, for development and rehearsal costs, materials, equipment, logistics and other costs associated with this production.

Wrestle, whether voluntary on involuntary, physical or mental, positive or negative is an action. We may wrestle with the result of a past dilemma, a projected decision, or current situation but the fret (or comfort) of this quandary takes place in the moment, often finding it’s not so much the finite content we wrestle with; it’s the strategy in how we’ll respond to it. This exhibition focuses on the broad aspects of circumstance. Brian Kenny sets the pace with the immediacy of the physical and strategic points necessary in the actual sport, projecting formality and beauty. He expands on that notion with Boys Never Fail, which affirms the winning aspect of boys as champions and their unique ability to hit the bulls-eye, as champions, on many different levels. Andrej Dubravsky examines youth and fantastical identity in the arena of alter egoism where young gay men break free from restriction. Frankie Rice demonstrates his ability to transform the containment of a medical solution to a social pandemic through the use of a visual a metaphor of hope and endurance, while Elizabeth Smolarz utilizes video to relay the stages of death in a banal setting of a Laundromat, with its delivery being both stunning and mundane. These combined works may not leave us with the artists solution to the theme yet more effectively, demonstrates how they contemplate it.
